God's Magic

Sometimes the Monkey amazes me with his observations on things...and I get a little scared every now and then when I think how close I can come to missing something really spectacular that he's had to say. This morning was one of those times...

We were running late and I was trying to get him out the door. He was having fun...playing with everything (his "guys" that the big-kid down the street gave him, the doorknob, the strings on his jacket, the screen on the door)...generally dawdling. He made it to the car door and stopped. I asked him three times to get in the car and he was just standing there staring at something across the street. I was trying to keep my patience in check.

Me: Honey, please, come on...we're running late.
Monkey: But...it's magic.
Me: What?
Monkey: There...look...it's magic.
Me: Where?

Across the street from our house was a tree with leaves blazing in a perfect shade of fall orange. The sun was bright...and the tree was all but on fire with the light of it. The Monkey was transfixed and pointing.

Monkey: Up there...see how sparkly it is? I think God put his magic on it.

It took the mention of God to make me finally stop and actually pay attention. The moment I did, I understood completely what he was talking about. And he was right: it was completely spectacular.

Me: Oh wow...you're right. It's beautiful.
Monkey: What do you think happens when God puts his magic on you?
Me: I think you sparkle.

I've heard it's all just wires, misdirection, sleight of hand, and really, really thin wires.
