Tonight

I was sitting on the sidewalk outside the Starbucks at Barnes and Noble reading a new book...which is to say, I was reading a little and people watching a lot. An old man stepped outside the store with his newspaper and made a point of walking over and spitting on a shiny red scooter parked near the sidewalk. I wondered for awhile what might inspire someone to spit on a scooter...and then I wondered for awhile whether this guy was generally an angry, miserable, spitting type of person.

Then I happened to catch a glimpse of the quote on the front of my journal:

"Life is brief and fragile. Do that which makes you happy."

Or...maybe spitting on scooters makes this guy happy. And who am I to infer otherwise.
